Like so many young men of my generation, I spent my early Saturday mornings in front of cartoons. I watched G.I. Joe, Batman, and the X-Men, but not as closely as I watched Cat Woman, Rogue, and The Baroness. I never went through a ‘girls are icky,’ phase in my life. As long as I can remember I have been attracted to strong, capable women. It didn’t hurt if they had cool costumes that clung to their sexy bodies, either. Like it or not, comic book movies have enjoyed a steady rise in mainstream motion pictures. The kids like me are all grown up. Those of us who enjoyed comic books and Saturday morning cartoons as kids are now old enough to go to the movies on their own and collect DVDs. Special effects can now handle the spectacle that was once confined to art and animation. Plus, post modernism is king. People are afraid to take risks, and are eager instead to harness existing subjects with built-in fan bases. All of these are reasons who we’ve seen a huge upswing in the number of comic book movies over the last decade. Like every pop culture phenomenon, porn is always close behind.

I’m not particularly a comic book fan, but one thing I really appreciate about these movies is that all of my Saturday morning cartoon fantasy ladies are now real, in the flesh, filling out their fantastic costumes. It’s great because it satisfies so many fetishes. The mainstream movie parody fan boys get what they want.
